No Shave November #11: Hey everyone! Another day, another beard picture - and as it turns out, yet another IEP meeting! I was dressed up for todays picture due to the latter, and it went so well that I was all smiles by the end of the day! Since the Eagles are playing on Monday Night Football tonight, todays heroes are a current and former member of the team. Beard Hero of the Day - Evan Mathis: An offensive guard for the Philadelphia Eagles, Evan Mathis was a journeymen at the position until he found a place with the Birds prior to the 2011 season. Since that time, Mathis has earned a slew of accolades for his dominant play, including a Pro Bowl nomination and an All Pro selection in 2013. In addition, Pro Football Focus deemed him the best offensive guard in all of football for his efforts during the 2011 and 2012 campaigns - an incredible achievement for a player who wandered aimlessly between the Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and Cincinnati Bengals from 2005-2011. For majority of his Eagles career, Mathis has sported a beard that, while not nearly as wild as that of his team mate Jason Kelce, is still pretty impressive! Mathis will return to the team tonight after being sidelined for the past two months due to an MCL injury. Lets hope he opens up some holes for LeSean McCoy to run through and reminds the Panthers why they need to fear the beard! Credit to Sean Bobbie for correctly guessing Mathis as todays Beard Hero! Mental Health Hero of the Day - Andre Waters: A former safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, Andre Waters brought tenacity to the backfield of the famed Gang Green, defense and glory to the number 20 before Eagles great Brian Dawkins ever stepped foot on an NFL field. An integral part of Buddy Ryans ferocious defensive units during the late 80s and the early 90s, Waters led the team in tackles four times while racking up an All-Pro selection and 15 interceptions over the course of his eleven year career. After the conclusion of his career, however, Waters plunged into a deep depression that he tried to combat by keeping himself busy with a collegiate coaching career. Unfortunately, Waters succumbed to his depression when he committed suicide in 2006. An autopsy later revealed that Waters brain had degenerated into that of an 85 year old Alzheimers patient due to the numerous concussions he had received while playing football. The autopsy later went on to state that this no doubt intensified Waters depression. Today, Waters death serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that come along with choosing to play professional football. For his amazing courage in working to overcome his depression through coaching and struggling with the Alzheimers like conditions on a daily basis, Andre Waters has rightly earned the title of Mental Health Hero. Thats all for today folks! Be sure to check the comments section for a hint at tomorrows heroes.
