No, doctors should not work for hospitals. The whole health care - TopicsExpress

No, doctors should not work for hospitals. The whole health care situation today is very dangerous to patients well being. Doctors working for hospitals and big corporations are relinquishing their decision making to some non medical bureaucrat whose only interest is the bottom line. To be brutally honest, patients are assigned a dollar amount which will decide ultimately the care they get. There are so many euphemisms used to spin this reality, like pay per performance or quality standards and so on. They all sound very good, but they are not. Doctors are not free to treat their patients they way they see fit, the elephant is now in the room. What makes me really sad and upset is that too many doctors are forgetting the real reason we became doctors in the first place and that is to take care of our fellow human beings at the best of our ability with total loyalty and commitment. As doctors we are the best at what we do when we walk together with our patients during their time of suffering as pilgrims on the same road with a common goal. We are at our best when we are able to become part of our patients journey in good health as well as in times of deep sorrow, but in order to do that we need to be free in our decision making. Of course resources cannot be squandered, but every patient is different and there is not one mold that fits us all even when facing the same disease. Yes many physicians are losing control of their profession today, but so few of us today seem to be fighting to retain such control. So many are giving up the very heart and meaning of the medical profession. They seem to have taken their eyes off the ultimate goal : our sacred oath to no one else but the patient. We sure live in interesting times. The road ahead seems quite rocky for all of us, doctors and patients alike. We need to keep well informed.
