No further division of Assam, demands SGM BY OUR STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI, September 26: The Sachetan Gana Mancha (SGM), Assam on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhawan, primarily opposing the further division of Assam and demanding security of the non–Bodo people residing in the BTAD area. Around 500 members of the SGM participated in the demonstration. The agitating members of SGM demanded the Governor to intervene and stop the killing, kidnapping and extortion in the BTAD areas. Participating in the demonstration, SGM president Dibyajyoti Baruah told the reporters that the SGM has demanded the Governor to exclude the non–Bodo villages from BTAD in a bid to escape from the horror of ethnic violence. “The BTC accord must be reviewed and non–Bodo majority villages must be excluded from BTAD. Even the Gauhati High Court has not rejected the demand for exclusion of the non–Bodo villages from BTAD,” he added. The SGM also submitted a memorandum to the Governor stating their demands. Their different demands include: To stop the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution in the mixed populated areas of Assam. Addressing the media, the chief convenor of Sanmilita Janagustiya Sangram Samiti, Brojen Mahanta, said that further division of Assam must be stopped. “A round table conference of all the ethnic groups to find the solution to the demand for autonomy must also be organised,” he added. They also demanded strict action against the Bodo extremists for their involvement in kidnapping, killing and extortion; scheduling of 6 ethnic groups including Koch Rajbongshi and Adivasi and immediate negotiations with all the organisations. A memorandum was also submitted to the Governor stating their demands.
