No photos to post from me. But I took my 2 year old to two black graveyards in Pomona, MD today in our new community of Quaker Neck. We cleaned the gravesites and planted flowers on about ten graves of veterans. Easy, peaceful. Ranging from those born in the mid 18th century to those who fought in the war to end all wars to verterans of WWII and Korea we were indiscriminate; except that we were looking for graves needing attention. It felt good. Small acts of kindness when noone will thank you or even know. My son knows. I did not tell him how my two grandfathers deteriorated from untreated PTSD into reliving the long range tortures of war far after leaving the battlefield. I did not tell him how our family only got to freedom from serving in war. We planted flowers, pulled weeds. He made paths with the small steamroller he had brought; and, we broke one of our handspades trying to lift some fallen headstones. Next time we will bring a shovel and maybe some friends. Funny thing, these were not black cemeteries at all; but, rather, they were long integrated. And, in long, hidden, misbegotten truth of USofA, the cemetery relfected on us the bitter history of race relations and racism in our country - those who had once proudly shared integrated cemeteries now are moved on. War, loss, family, remeberance need know no skin colors.
