No prayers in Jamia Masjid on first Friday of Ramadhan Srinagar: On the first Friday of Islamic month of Ramadhan, the authorities barred people from offering Friday congregational prayers in central Jamia Masjid by placing the historical mosque under siege amid curfew-like curbs. Dozens of police and paramilitary personal deployed in Nowhatta – where Jamia Masjid is located – restricted people from coming towards mosque and directed them to return back, witnesses said. Fearing pro-freedom and anti-India protests, the state authorities, since 2010, routinely bar people from offering Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid on curfew days. A religious amalgam Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama headed by valley’s chief priest and chairman of Huriyat Conference have time again flayed government over the move. (GNS)
