No wonder the sun never set on the British Empire, even God - TopicsExpress

No wonder the sun never set on the British Empire, even God couldnt trust the English in the dark, says Shashi Tharoor, Member of the Indian Parliament in a debate organized by the Indo-British Heritage Trust, as the inaugural event to mark the 400th anniversary of formal relations between India and Britain back in 1614. The debate was to find the gain and loss of India during the British reign. The British Empire spanned the globe. This led to the saying that the Sun never set on it, since it was always daytime somewhere in the Empire. The way he presented his arguments bore fruits and that could change the opinion of the house to agree that the British rule did more harm than good. The opinion of the house had been that the India benefit was more than its loss. The main arguments of the supporters of the British Raj were in favour of the English language, rule of law, railways and cricket as positive legacy of the Empire. Mr. Tharoors counter arguments quoted below brought a round of applause The fact that we seized upon the English language for our own liberation is to our credit and not by British design and Cricket was an Indian game accidentally discovered by the British. youtube/watch?v=nCwi6NGpbCI
