Nokomis School Grade Discontinuance Accepted By Board of Education: After consultation with parents, students, school staff and Nokomis community members, the following motion was passed by the Nokomis School Community Council in late April 2014. The resolution was then sent to the Horizon School Division Board of Education for consideration. Nokomis SCC “Be it resolved that, with heavy hearts and mixed emotions, the Nokomis School Community Council authorizes the discontinuance of Grade 9 through Grade 12 at Nokomis School effective July 1, 2014.” After much discussion at their regular meeting on May 14, 2014, the Horizon School Division Board of Education passed the following motion to discontinue grades 9 to 12 at the Nokomis School as recommended by the School Community Council. Horizon Board of Education “That we accept the recommendation of the Nokomis School Community Council to give the Horizon School Division Board of Education consent to discontinue grades 9-12 as of July 1, 2014.” Jim Hack, Horizon School Division Board Chair expressed the following. “As elected representatives, the role of the Board of Education is to ensure a quality education is provided to all students in a responsible manner. We believe the decision to discontinue grades will benefit the education of the students of Nokomis in the long run.” Mr. Hack continues. “We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Nokomis SCC and the entire community of Nokomis. They are to be commended for their passion, cooperation and hard work. We will continue to work closely with staff, parents, students and the school community council to ensure that smooth transitions for students affected are achieved.” As of September 30, 2013, 57 students are enrolled in Nokomis School from grades K-12. For the upcoming 2014-2015 school year 6 students were indicated to be enrolled in grades 9-12 from the Nokomis school service area.
