Non-Profit Organization GOONJ.. is providing clothes & other basic amenities to millions in the far-flung villages by turning urban wastage into a resource for rural India. About 35 percent of India’s one billion strong population lives below the poverty line, with the majority of them based in villages. For this population, living is a daily battle for survival as each day brings anew the struggle for everyday necessities like clothes, medicine, basic cooking utensils, school books etc. Not one strip of cloth is wasted at Goonj, a volunteer-run urban recycling center in New Delhi. Meet Anshu Gupta, Ashoka Fellow and Founder of GOONJ, a man who has shown us how a T-shirt hanging in your wardrobe that you will never wear, could save a life in a village in India. He has shown us how that water bottle your daughter doesn’t use anymore can make a little boy in a village attend school. With the long trudge to school in the sweltering heat, it is sometimes just a bottle of water standing between illiteracy and education. He has highlighted the taboo subject of sanitary pads for women in villages, saving thousands from disease and indignity. Through his nationwide ‘Cloth-for-Work’ initiative he is not only providing dignity to people, he is cleaning up villages, building bridges, providing disaster relief, and so much more. No wonder NASA, CNN-IBN, Forbes, the World Bank, and many other organisations in India and around the world are so impressed with Anshu Gupta.
