Normally, I would be posting my entry for the next months parish - TopicsExpress

Normally, I would be posting my entry for the next months parish magazine but I have already put Ambers piece in, which was the main focus. If you want to see the rest of the info, here it is. My apologies to Anne, I corrected it here but the parish mag will say you went to Sydney! (Right continent at least :)) Toddler Group is every Tuesday from 9-30-11.30am during term time. As with all our community services, everyone is welcome, not just those in the upper parishes. For a small donation of £1 per family, we provide tea, coffee, juice and biscuits. Ride-on and push-along toys are left out in the main hall where there is plenty of space to run around and burn off some of that excess energy. The regular mums are a friendly group and will welcome any new faces. If you aren’t sure where to go, or would just prefer not to walk in alone, come and find me in the office next to the main door and I’ll take you through. At the end of each session, everyone helps to pack the toys at the side of the hall, wash up and sweep up crumbs etc. Another activity for preschoolers is Storytime which runs from 11-11.30am during term time. Our story and rhyme teller is Cornelia, one of the Guille-Allès staff who is specially trained in this area. I couldn’t possibly do this justice just in words, you really do need to come along and see for yourself. I am absolutely certain both you and your baby will have a great time. I’m considering stealing the caretakers grand-daughter for half an hour so I can go and join in! Sessions are held upstairs in the Studio which can be accessed either through the main door, or up the stairs next to Daisy Chain, opposite the playground. The Library stocks childrens books so you pop downstairs and have a browse afterwards. The Western Parishes Community Library is open every Wednesday from 10-12pm. Also run in conjunction with Guille-Allès, this is a service open to any member of the library, regardless of where they live. If you aren’t a member already, the volunteers at Styx can enrol you. Cds, dvds and books in various formats are all available to borrow. The library is staffed solely by volunteers dealing with everything from setting out the books to providing endless cups of tea and coffee. Staff will be happy to order a book for you if it isn’t in stock for a minimal fee, and books are rotated on a regular basis so there is always something for everyone. The Styx Internet and Learning Centre is open every Thursday 10-11.30am We had a very quiet time over New Year, in fact on our first week back, only Maurice turned up! Thankfully this was just a one off and I was delighted to see both old and new faces at the next session. It wasn’t really the weather to be going out and doing much though. Ann has been away visiting her daughter in Adelaide (all that sun!) so Tim very gallantly returned to help us out. I hope you realise Tim, we have been holding back on giving you your ‘Sorry you are leaving’ card in the hopes of luring you back! Ipads/tablets are definitely becoming more popular and most people find them surprisingly easy to use. We offer support to anyone needing advice on how to email, skype, navigate the internet, download photos and anything else computer related you may need help with. It doesn’t just stop at basic laptop/computer use either. Ipads, tablets, kindles, we will do our best to assist with anything. I always remember the lovely gentleman who brought in his adding machine as he couldn’t quite remember how to ‘work out compound interest in reverse’, at least I think that was the task he set. It sounded daunting, but we did it, somehow. We do have a couple of laptops available for use, but it is far better to bring your own if you have one. I would strongly advise that you bring a notepad and pen though. There is nothing worse than finally achieving something only to go home and find that because you have forgotten one tiny element, you now can’t carry out your task. If you have never tried before but want to give it a go in a friendly, informal atmosphere then pop in and have a chat. Sessions are very relaxed, we believe that laughter and learning go together very well. There is no need to book, just turn up any time while the session is open. There is no charge although a donation box is left out for those who wish to contribute. These are the community activities provided by the Centre, all of which are part-funded by donations and subsidised by the Western Parishes Youth and Community Centre Trust. As a charity, we rely heavily on fundraising and donations, but also on the income derived from hiring out the various rooms.
