North Baltimore Football this is one of the writings that I am sharing with our Lady Tiger and Boys Golfers as we enter the Tournament Trail. And I thought, all of the NBHS athletes might ought consider these fine words, from one of the greatest golfers of all time: Don’t Dwell on Yesterday’s News Brad Brewer, a PGA Professional and golf writer tells this story of being invited to Arnold Palmers’ home for dinner: During my years of playing professionally and now teaching the game, I have been associated with several PGA Tour greats who have won tournaments and even major events. A tournament win is a benchmark in a Tour professional’s career and a memory that is greatly cherished. I have come to notice how many of these champions will designate a room in their homes for the trophies and memories, almost a shrine you might say, to their great achievements. I have also noticed how too often after reaching the pinnacle they don’t seem to produce the same results, many times going into a slump and sometimes even disappearing from the leader board, never to be seen again. Back in the late ’80s I had just been hired as the director of Arnold Palmer’s Golf Academy and was invited to the Palmers’ home for dinner. I arrived a few minutes early that evening. Mrs. Palmer greeted me at the door and graciously invited me into her home. “Arnie is still getting ready, Brad. He will be down shortly.” So I asked her if it would be alright for me to get a tour of the “Trophy Room.” Ninety-two lifetime Tour wins, I’m thinking this has got to be something to see. She replied, “Oh, we don’t have such a room, Brad.” Later that evening, during dinner conversation, I brought up what was kind of puzzling to me since my arrival. “Mr. Palmer,” I asked. “Ninety-two Tour wins, that’s a lot of hardware. So how come you have no designated trophy display?” He put his fork down, looked me straight in the eye and said, “For what? That’s yesterday’s news!” After a brief pause, he went on to explain himself with that Palmer grin of confidence on his face. “Don’t take me wrong, Brad, I have enjoyed every victory and cherish the memory greatly. We even celebrated a little bit after each one. But come Monday morning of the next week, I’m no different than the man who missed the cut last week. In fact, he is probably more hungry than I. So if I am to be competitively ready, I must get my thoughts off yesterday and deal with today. There will be a day when I can take the time to look back. But as long as I want to stay competitive I must never stop and marvel at what I have accomplished, only look forward to my next challenge at hand.” Brad Brewer
