Northampton City council proposes pay raises for city employees NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Northampton City council is reviewing a proposal that may give some top city employees a pay raise. An advisory board was created this year to review city salaries. They recommend increasing the mayor’s salary from $80,000 to $92,500. They also want to raise the salary of the city clerk from $65,000 to more than $71,000. The board says the pay increases are necessary to attract qualified candidates to office and keep pay competitive with communities of a similar size. City Councilor Jesse Adams told 22News it gives them something to think about. “It’s important that the mayor and city clerk get raises,” says Northampton City Councilor Jesse Adams. “We have a history of having very good mayors and city clerks and it’s important to keep attracting top quality to ensure that they are adequately compensated for the work they do.” It should be mentioned that city councilors who vote on the proposal would also be getting a raise of about $4,000. Also under the recommendations, part-time elected officials would no longer be offered health insurance or retirement benefits.
