Noruma R Siveri > THE PNG NEWS PAGE ANOTHER CHEAP MOVE _____________________________________ 07/07/2014 News updates DEPUTY Prime Minister Leo Dion has resigned from the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party (THE Party). And he has written to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill advising him of his intention to join the ruling People’s National Congress Party. In a letter to Prime Minister O’Neill and THE Party President Bungtabu Brown on July 06, 2014 Mr Dion cited the pain he went through over the last few weeks of the political issue, which prompted him to make the move to resign. And already Prime Minister Peter O’Neill today welcomed the decision by Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion to join the People’s National Congress Party. Mr. Dion cited events of the last few months, particularly continuous criticisms of the government by The Party leader Don Polye, who sits in the middle bench after being sacked as Treasurer, when the party is still a part of the coalition government. In a letter to THE party president Bungtabu Brown on July 1, 2014, Dion said it was painful and awkward for him to sit as deputy Prime Minister in government and cop criticisms and attack from Polye when THE party is a part of government. He said such behavior is not part of the Westminster system of government, and he decided to resign from THE party. On July 6, 2014 he wrote to the Prime Minister advising that he was joining the PNC party. Dion said it was a tough decision for him to leave THE party, but he had to do so in the interest of maintaining stability in government. Mr Dion joins five other MPs from THE party who have joined PNC party. They are Douglas Tomuriesa, Benjamin Poponawa, Delilah Gore, De Kewanu, and David Arore. Two others - Francis Marus, and Benjamin Philip – joined the PNC party from the United Resources Party. With Dion’s inclusion, the PNC party number now stands at 57. Prime Minister O’Neill welcomed Dion to PNC, saying his maturity and experience will be a valuable asset to PNC members, many of whom are young and are in their first or second year in politics. “We have introduced very sound policies and development programs that have the wide support of our community. For these programs to be successfully implemented for the benefit of all citizens, we have to provide a strong and stable government. “In Dion, Enga Governor Peter Ipatas, Nixon Duban and Isaac Waigarava amongst others, we have a blend of wisdom, experience and youth that will provide the source of strong for the party and government into the future,” the Prime Minister PNG Today / Post Courier
