Not able to sleep, because of, well, whats going on all over the world right now. Its so frustrating not to know how to help, what to do. My Dads aunts and their husbands went to Israel in 1926, and quite literally, made the desert bloom; founded kibbutzim; welcomed lost and traumatized newcomers to the only place Jews had felt welcomed- welcomed!- for thousands of years. I can understand other opinions, other viewpoints, but only intellectually...as an artist, my heart dictates the shape of my soul. In Jerusalem, theres a center to help settle in older Russian emigrants: its called Jakovs Place, after my late dads great uncle, who was known and loved at Auschwitz for his talent at welcoming and settling in, and even slightly cheering up, the newcomers to that hell. (Being one of our ancestors, he probably told them extremely bad jokes.) Oddly, the most comfort i am finding right now, is in reading something from the New Testament...you know, the part that is generally considered maybe not as Jewish as the, um, prequel. In Buddhism, theres a phrase that means, Start from here..... This passage seems like a good here to start from. Love Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.
