Not all orchids qualify as what most people would consider pretty, but even the humble ones can be interesting. This photo is of Dendrophylax porrecta, a plant lacking stems and leaves and consisting only of small groups of roots that, besides attaching the plant to its twig and absorbing water and nutrients, carry out photosynthesis and from time to time produce flowers. This plant was photographed in a seasonally dry tropical forest near the Pacific coast of the Mexican state of Jalisco. It had many fruits and, in all, it measured less that 4 cm in height!
