Not everything in life should be defined by its monetary value. Royal Mail is part of the fabric of the nation – we don’t want to see it ripped apart. If the Royal Mail is sold off affordable prices, rural services and free postal services for our service men and women as well as vulnerable groups will disappear. The aim of our campaign is to persuade politicians that they must act now and guarantee that these vital services do not disappear. We have the support of groups and individuals representing the countryside, the blind and partially sighted, the elderly and small businesses. You can help us by getting involved. Use the social networking tools on this site to promote the campaign and most importantly write to your MP setting out your concerns. As our campaign grows so will this site. So please return to us regularly to keep updated on news and other campaign developments. New broad based coalition launches to protect postal services from threat of a Royal Mail sell off A new campaign was launched today aiming to highlight the threat an autumn Royal Mail sell off will place on postal services throughout the UK. With support from groups and individuals representing the countryside, the elderly, small businesses and the blind, the Save Our Royal Mail campaign has identified six very real threats to the public: Prices will shoot up – stamp prices are no longer regulated and VAT may eventually apply. The £1 First Class stamp might not be far off. Small businesses will suffer – For many small businesses, especially those in rural areas there is often no alternative to the Royal Mail. Suffering from high energy bills, businesses can ill afford to see the cost of using the postal service rocket. The countryside will be left isolated – Everyone understands that it costs more than the price of a stamp to deliver a letter to a rural address. Despite assurances to the contrary, the postal services regulator OFCOM is working to determine the real cost for deliveries to rural areas. It has also been looking recently at future options for the daily delivery service to addresses in the countryside. Free postal services to the blind under threat? – The “Articles for the blind” service is essential but expensive to operate. No privately owned business will want to bear this cost and despite previous assurances we now find that OFCOM has been reviewing the future of “universal” services. HM Forces postal lifeline scrapped? – Royal Mail provides a freepost service for British forces. These letters and parcels from loved ones provide a vital boost to our troops in conflict. But a privately owned Royal Mail will not want to maintain this non-profit making service – and neither can it be compelled to. Royal Mail’s heritage lost –Ruthless cost cutting may well see red pillar boxes go the same way as the iconic GPO telephone boxes. And this time it won’t be possible to stop Royal Mail renaming itself Consignia. Save Our Royal Mail Campaign Director Mario Dunn said: “Save Our Royal Mail is a broad based and growing campaign. We want to take our message to the politicians – do not rush headlong into a sell off if you cannot guarantee a privatised Royal Mail will constrain its prices and provide these services at their current level”.
