Not long ago, I would have tended to agree with the notion that humans are a curse on the earth. Now it seems to me that we are a species that acts the same as all the other species around us. The difference is, we learned how to unlevel the playing field. Like the other species, there is nothing built in to stop us from doing what we can, and so we do. Stand back far enough, and we, including everything we do, are just part of a total ecology and belong to it as much as any other part. Separating ourselves out, in other words, rather than being the solution, may be the problem. If you do stand back far enough, you might also notice that humans are learning to take a longer view, to be more intelligent about our choices, and even become willing to cooperate on a global scale. Its easy to find the many times we fail at this, and they can obscure the times we succeed, albeit seldom completely. We are moving towards managing ourselves and the consequences of our actions more intelligently. A question is, will it be soon enough? Personally, Ive always been attracted to apocalyptic scenarios and wonder if that is a shared trait in certain groups. There is something delicious, after all, in being one of the few, the lonely voice in the wilderness, who knows like Sarah Conner whats coming while all the rest around us continue in our ignorant bliss.
