The Damansara Utama assemblyman disagreed with Perkasa’s take on the suggestion, which was raised by Petronas chief executive Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas in his interview with The Edge recently, and accused the Malay rights group of “racialising” what she said was meant to be an issue on national welfare and growth. She reminded Perkasa that about three quarters of Petronas’s employees are Bumiputeras and any improvement to the firm’s finances would indirectly benefit the community. “Firstly, having an open bidding system will bring the cost down substantially, increasing Petronas profits, part of which will become dividend payout to the government, which can then be channeled to more strategic bumiputra development program,” she said in a statement here. “Secondly, having to bring cost down through open bidding, Petronas will have higher margin to improve its employees compensation schemes to retain talents in the highly competitive oil and gas industry,” she added. Yeo said this would not only improve on company productivity but would also help develop the firm’s well-deserving Bumiputera employees.
