“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14 Keep your eye on the prize! So many of us set goals in our lives. We want to graduate, maybe college, get a good job, get that new car, get married, have kids, buy that dream home, become rich and famous, start our own business, retire with security, lose that weight, gain that weight and on and on. Sounds like a whole bunch of New Year’s resolutions, right? What about become a better Christian, read the bible all the way through, become more submissive to God’s will, become obedient to Christ, do more for others than for ourselves, forgive those that you have refused to forgive, be more kind, or live your life for Jesus and make it into heaven? Paul was given that miracle on the road to Damascus and from that moment he knew that his life had changed. He chose to follow that call with devotion. For the majority of us, we have not had that one great moment of interruption in our lives that stopped us from traveling down the road that will lead to our destruction and put us on the path that will lead to our salvation. Most of us have had more subtle calls and much more mundane encounters with the gospel. That should not leave us lukewarm in our commitments though and it should not leave us without the desire to replace every goal that we have ever had for ourselves in our lives with the only goal that matters and that is to become disciples of Christ and get home to heaven. I am sometimes overwhelmed with sadness because I see so many people refuse to take their faith seriously. I see so many people give so little thought and effort to the Lord. I see so many people be casual in their devotion to Jesus and I am sad for them. Jesus does not want part time followers. I say all the time when preaching that there are not any 23 and a half hour a day Christians in heaven. Those that are blessed to get to heaven are those that are worshiping the Lord 24 hours a day every day. Jesus said that you must love him more than mother, father and children and that also includes ourselves. We must love Jesus more than we love us. We need to prioritize our lives right and make sure that we know in our hearts and souls who comes first, who we love the most and what matters the most. Make your goal heaven and begin to know where your true treasure lies and begin to let your heart sing with the joy of it. “For many are called, but few are chosen.” Matthew 22:14 Love That Cross, Pastor John Collins
