Lurid and vividly absurd, this wild movie is a powerful combination of violence, politically incorrect humor and profound reflections on a modern European man, lost in a hostile world, which once was his home. For two main characters, self-defense turns to vengeance, vengeance to survival, and survival to all-out crusade. An outstanding performance by Vincent Cassel in a role of a bored to death dandy-troublemaker makes his Mephistopheles-alike character stand side by side with Alex from “A Clockwork Orange” and Paul from “Funny Games”. Minimalist electo soundtrack and cold industrial landscapes of northern France make this movie a pleasant aesthetic experience. “Were a people with no country and no army, but our day will come.”
