Notwithstanding offense to vegetarians, do you think it would be a more productive activity toward wildlife conservation if the government promoted sea turtle farming? For instance, concede exclusive areas of the sea to fishing companies so that you would have direct accountability for the local sea turtle population. This way fishing companies are pressured to protect wildlife much more than the government is, whose only real motivation is public opinion. And public opinion on preserving sea turtles, even though its seen as something noble, really no one cares about the issue. Private companies, on the other hand, renewal of their multi-billion peso sea turtle farming concession depends on compliance to regulation (e.g., setting a minimum sea turtle population). And because they are granted exclusive rights, they are also sure to chase off unlicensed small-time poachers and other companies who wish to take a slice of their profits. Making sure that the turtles thrive guarantees their profits. Poachers do unsustainable practices that are harmful to the environment because they are not accountable to the well-being of the seas where they conduct their activities. Conceding exclusive areas to fishing companies changes that.
