November 12 - Day 316 Mark 15 & Matthew 27 Pilate had given the crowd gathered at Jesus’ crucifixion a choice between Jesus or Barabbas. An innocent man or a guilty man. A restorer of life or a taker of life. One that was pure in heart or one that was wicked in heart. One whose touch was tender or one whose touch always brought pain? One whose hands would heal or one whose hands would shed innocent blood. The choice that day was very easy for the mob, they screamed. . . Barabbas, Barabbas, Barabbas. . . Give us Barabbas! Crucify the Christ! Free Barabbas and kill the Christ! Pilate was stunned by this choice. He pulled up the basin and washed his hands of the whole affair and delivered Jesus to the whipping post and finally to the cross. Why did they choose Barabbas? The answer seems to be that they were disappointed with Jesus. This was the crowd that, just a few days before, had welcomed Him into Jerusalem. The city was filled with people Jesus had healed. The eyes of the blind had been opened, the deaf made to hear, and the lame to walk. We too face the same decision these Jews had to make between Barabbas and Jesus. Have you ever been disappointed in God? Have you ever expected Him to act in a certain way, but He did not do things the way you thought they should be done? “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways, declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9). Jesus, forgive me for the many times I have doubted Your plan and purpose for my life, and even the times I may have “walked away” from You in disappointment that things didn’t go my way. Help me to choose You in every circumstance and decision that I face. I want to be faithful to You and to Your plan for my life. Help me to trust in You, and not lean on my own understanding. In Jesus Name. Amen.
