November 2014 SDEC meeting report This was an organizational and informational meeting. The committees met to select second vice chairs and secretaries and briefly discuss the roles of the committees. Messaging, Resolutions and Platform TDP Chair Hinojosa appointed Dennis Teal as chair and Fredericka Phillips (TDP vice chair) as vice chair of the committee The committee members selected JC as second vice chair and secretary when he stepped out of the room for a moment. Linda and JC are both members of the Messaging subcommittee which is chaired by Kathleen Thompson Linda requested to be vice chair of the Messaging subcommittee, a vote will take place over the phone. County and Party Affairs Committee TDP Chair Hinojosa appointed Teresa Klein chair and Eli Olivarez vice chair There are three subcommittees: Urban County, Suburban/MidSize County, Rural County Linda is a member of the committee and was assigned to the Urban delegation. She will sit on the Leadership, Convention and Constituent Outreach subcommittees. Legislative Committee – is a committee of the whole meaning that all SDEC members are members of the committee TDP Chair Hinojosa appointed David Griggs as chair and xxx as vice chair The committee members elected JC as the second vice chair ______________________ Cliff Walker of Battleground Texas spoke during the lunch period and held a Q&A afterward. He took a lot of criticism and agreed that there were weaknesses that needed correction and he promised they would be addressed going forward. They included the need to execute agreements with county parties in a period of a couple of months rather than taking nearly a year, accepting the guidance of local party folks regarding their knowledge of the area such as inaccessible addresses. Another shortcoming with BGTX they said they will address: treating all of Texas as the same. Cliff said that all voter contact info would flow into the party VAN database by the end of the year as specified in their contract with the TDP. They are negotiating how volunteer info will be shared. When asked about whether they will work Texas as hard in 2016 as they did in 2014 as opposed to exporting labor to other states he said it wasn’t up to him but instead to the volunteers who make up BGTX. Chair Hinojosa took a hard line and told him in no uncertain terms that if they want to be our partners they will NOT export volunteer labor. ______________________ Chair Hinojosa – spoke about the results of the election and that it doesn’t mean we change our positions but instead change the focus of our message because people don’t get excited about social issues when they’re worried about putting food on the table. Will Hailer reported on what was accomplished by the party and its allies in the 2014 election cycle, even in the loss we made gains in some areas. See the slide show at the link below. txdemocrats.org/body/TDP-2014-Final-Report.pdf Nominations Committee recommended approval of two new county chairs in where we had none and they were unanimously approved.
