November 25, 1972 - 42 Years Ago Today: Carole King debuted at No. 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single, Been To Canaan. This was Kings 9th entry on the Hot 100 as a performer. It became her 5th Top 40 single peaking at No. 24 on January 6, 1973. King had already scored dozens of hits including several Top Tens and No. 1s for writing other recording acts with her then-husband, Gerry Goffin, between 1958-1968. Their first No. 1, Will You Love Me Tomorrow was released in 1960 and went to the top of the Hot 100 week-ending January 30, 1961. Been To Canaan, was a single off of her 1972 album, Rhymes & Reasons which peaked at No. 2 for three weeks and was the follow-up to her 1971 album, Music, which began a three-week run at No. 1 on January 1, 1972. Meanwhile, her 1971 album, Tapestry, was in its 18 month on the Billboard 200 at the time Been To Canaan debuted on the Hot 100. Incidentally, Tapestry totaled 302 weeks (10 weeks shy of 6 years) on the chart. Between 1962-1982, King scored 18 singles on the Hot 100 which includes one dozen Top 40s, 4 Top Tens and one No. 1. Been To Canaan became her 2nd of 4 No. 1s on the Billboard AC chart. King and Gerry Goffin were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as non-performers) in 1990. In 2004, she received the Grammy Trustees Award and in 2013 she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2013, she was also the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song - the first woman to be so honored. In 2014, Carole King was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year. Original picture sleeve posted below on this music page.
