For the journey, his airplane, the Inspiration III was transformed into a virtual classroom – the Flying Classroom - to provide daily dispatches to classrooms around the world. The Flying Classroom is a cutting-edge, global, STEM+ learning adventure designed to help students excel in Math, Science, Reading, and other core subject areas for grades K-8. Daily dispatches on the website promoted learning anytime, anywhere, on a broad range of mobile devices. In 2007, Captain Barrington Irving became the youngest pilot to fly around the world solo in a single engine airplane. Raised in Miami’s inner city, Barrington turned down football scholarships to follow his dream in aviation and washed airplanes to earn money for flight school. He honed his flying skills by practicing at home on a $40 Microsoft flight simulator video game. For his solo around the world flight, he faced more than 50 rejections for sponsorship before convincing several manufacturers to donate individual aircraft components. He orchestrated the assembly of the plane from the donated parts and he took off with no weather radar, no de-icing system, and just thirty dollars in his pocket. I like to do things people say I cant do. Needless to say, he succeeded in his quest, setting 10 world records in the process. After graduating magna cum laude as an aeronautical engineer, Barrington founded the educational nonprofit, Experience Aviation. He supervised a group of high school students as they built an airplane in only ten weeks that he would pilot on its test flight. Among Barringtons many accolades is a 2007 Congressional Resolution acknowledging his historic achievement and for his pioneering work in the field of aviation education. He is also the recipient of the highest honor given by the Florida State Senate, the Medallion of Excellence, and he is recognized as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer. Please join us in welcoming back Captain Irving and hear him tell us of his incredible global adventure. We will be the special guests of the private Ocean Reef Club on upper Key Largo. Their chefs will prepare a gourmet lunch in a fantastic venue. Our menu is chicken française, vegetable rice pilaf, French beans, pearl onions, baby mushrooms along with fresh lemonade, ice tea and bottled water. A vegetarian option is available on request.
