Now I know that every person in the world has a movie that they don’t want people to know that they secretly like, but I am not one of those people. There is a movie that I freely admit is one of the most awful films that has probably ever been made, but I can’t help but love it. If I was a film critic, then this one would definitely get me fired. Are you ready? Drum roll please. The movie that I not so secretly can’t hate, because it is way too funny is called “Sharknado: The Other One”. I just heard the collective gasp of disappointment exhaled across the virtual world, and yet there is still something about flying sharks eating celebrities that causes my laughter to drown it out. One of my favorite parts in the movie is this man standing on the street corner telling everyone that the “end is near”. Within seconds of his yelling out this rant, a shark gets tossed out of the tornado, swims through the air currents, and consumes the man making him a true prophet and now martyr to the movie universe. As we approach the end of this year and the beginning of a new season, the truth of this movie moment becomes a glaring reality for both you and me. Few of us remember the unrealistic fantasies that temporarily visited our brains one year ago about how we were going to change our life, or maybe even change the world. More of us remember the personal goals that were never achieved; and as if our dreams were put on repeat, we get ready to play them again, like a very familiar song. All of us, however, remember the regrets of this year. We remember things unfinished, relationships unfulfilled, communications misunderstood, dreams unrealized, and promises broken. Regardless though of the strength of your pains, the strength of your memories, or the strength of your failures…the end is near. In Genesis 7, Noah had just finished telling everyone around him that the end was near. Then God flooded the earth, and Noah and his family were the only humans to survive on an ark. After 150 days, the water started receding, and he sent a white dove out to search out dry land. The first time it returned because it couldn’t find a place to land. After seven days he sent it out again, and it came back with a olive leaf. After another seven days, he sent it out, and it never returned. At Walmart this last week, right before I walked in, a white dove landed in front of me. I totally wanted to find Noah and tell him that I found his bird. All joking aside, the irony of this simple sighting is actually the inspiration for this blog today. His dove symbolized the end of a very long journey. His dove symbolized hope for a new start. His dove disappearing even symbolized that old things were passing away and that all things were about to be new. I am going to choose to believe that God sent that dove to remind me of the same thing for my life and my family. This year, I am believing that the best is yet to come. Instead of my hope being eaten by flying sharks of doom and despair being thrown at me from a unpredictable tornado of terror, I am going to remember a dove…at Walmart…staring at me….as if to say to every regret that you and I have ever had…in Jesus name is erased…the end is near!
