Now I know why we are so dang tough in Louisiana, we have to be to survive. Interesting data: Majority of La. parishes among hardest places to live in the US In a composite ranking of the nations 3,135 counties and parishes published this week by The Upshot—a new policy and politics website launched by New York Timeswith East Carroll Parish ranking among the bottom ten. The analysis considered six data points for each county: education (percentage of residents with at least a bachelors degree), median household income, unemployment rate, disability rate, life expectancy and obesity. It then averaged each countys relative rank in these categories to create an overall ranking. Louisianas four other lowest ranking parishes include Morehouse, Madison, Tensas and West Carroll parishes, all of which ranked among the bottom 70 U.S. counties. Only eight Louisiana parishes ranked among the top half of the nations counties. They were, in order of ranking: St. Tammany, Lafayette, Ascension, Bossier, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, St. Charles and Cameron parishes. EBRPs overall rank was 1,507 out of 3,135, with a median income of $48,274 and a life expectancy of 76 years. The parishs unemployment, disability and obesity rates are at 6.3%, 2.2% and 39%, respectively, while 33.7% of the population has earned a bachelor degree. Aside from Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas have counties among the ten lowest in the country.
