Now Im told former commissioner C.W. Smith said on radio yesterday that 15-119 would outlaw hybrid plants. Not true, not even close. I read the ordinance...here are the definitions from the ordinance text: Genetically Engineered does not include traditional selected breeding, conjugation, fermentation, hybridization, or normal in vitro fertilization. The other part of the ordinance mentioning hybridization in the definitions section which it bans: or hybridization techniques which overcome natural physiological, reproductive, or recombination barriers, where the donor cells/protoplasts do not fall within the same taxonomic families, in a way that does not occur by natural multiplication or natural recombination. In other words, your un-natural hybrid of a fish with a tomato, or fishato, is banned. Your normal selectively bred hybrids continue to be fine. We can debate and have differences of opinion on the wisdom of the 15-119 ban, of GMO in general, of the enforcement pros and cons, fine...just dont B.S. people on whats actually banned. Read the ordinance, for crying out loud.
