Now Playing: Feurs de Rocaille from The Scent of a Woman by Thomas Newman; track 16, 2:51. While Shawshank Redemption was my first Thomas Newman score, seeing The Scent of a Woman in the cinema was the first time I noticed him as a composer. This selection begins very triumphantly (it scores the end of the film where the cast bursts from the school hearing room upon the victorious verdict, with all the glad-handing and back-slapping that ensues). What makes this cue incredible isnt the triumphant brass that starts the cue (though, its a great listen); but rather the sublime melodies in strings that follow when Pacinos character meets a woman whose acquaintance just might signify a new beginning for that wrecked characters life. He smells her perfume, and identifies it as Fleurs de Rocaille: Flowers by a Brook. She smiles, he smiles. This may be finally a worthy woman for whom hes been searching. Its a sweet scene. While that meeting plays out on screen, Thomas Newman does something incredible with the music. He builds a lovely tension that seriously feels like something wafting in the breeze; something so near, but unreachable. Notice the tension he builds with the gorgeous violin line at 2:07 through 2:16. And then, after that, how the notes seem to lift and fall, waiting for a place to land, finally resolving at 2:38. Damn, its brilliant. #NowPlayingFilmMusic youtube/watch?v=m0IriSIx4us
