Now Swamy is hitting the points. Hope he will write about Sylhet too, and let the world know. Only 2 referendums were held before partition : One NWFP and the other in Sylhet. Referendum in NWFP is stil understandable as it was a separate province , but why referendum in Sylhet ??? It was a district of Assam and by default it should have been a part of India, as Assam was a Congress ruled state. But, the hardline Assamese leaders including Gopinath Bordoloi misused his position, conspired and forced the referendum. Anti Bengali propaganda was flooding Assamese media of that period . This was deliberately done to saw the seed of hatred in the heart of Sylheti (Bengali) population of Assam. In the name of saving Assamese interest they let Pakistan take away the District of Sylhet. Only Karimganj subdivison of the District was later made a part of India. Sylhet was the most fertile, populous, economically and academically advanced district of Assam before partition. Sylhet plus present Cachar district was large enough, economically viable enough to be declared as a state after independence. Bordoloi could have retained Sylhet. If his aim was to protect Assamese interest, he could have merged Sylhet with Cachar and made a separate state for the Bengalis in the North East India. It was not something unthinkable, as was evident by the subsequent balkanisation of Assam, and is still going on in the form of Bodoland and Dimaland and Kamtapur . Being from Karimganj, I have heard a lot about this from various scholars and historians. I heard, people of Karimganj were forced to hoist the Pakistani Flag on 14th August 1947. My home is in the heart of Karimganj town. The one hoisted in my home is still there in my home . There were rumors and confusions going wild about the probable riots and atrocities by the Muslim league supporters. Ultimately, on 14th August evening radio Calcutta broke the news that out of the 5 subdivision of Sylhet , only Karimganj would be retained in Assam. This was done else, there will not be proper mode of connectivity to the state of Tripura.
