Now Tesco (Europes largest Supermarket chain) bans chocolate at all checkouts. Sweets and chocolates are being removed from all Tescos checkouts from today in a move against childhood obesity. The nationss biggest seller of confectionery is extending a ban, already in place at its supermarkets,to some 2,000 smaller Express and Metro outlets. The decision has been welcomed by parents and the public health minister and will pile pressure on others to follow suit. Lidl (German supermarket chain) already has a ban in place but other leading stores have dragged their feet on adopting a policy that would reduce pester power from children for junk food. The sweets and chocolates have been replaced by a variety of healthier snacks including dried fruit, nuts and cereal bars. Every food item on the checkout will either be one of the recommended five- a - day portion of fruit or vegetable,be in calorie-controlled snack packs or deemed by the Department of health to be a Healthier Snack. Research by the store found that nearly two-thirds of customers said removing confectionery from the checkouts would help them make healthier choices. Public Health Minister Jane Ellison backed Tescos move, saying: This initiative will help people make healthier choices, which all contributes to reducing the long term cost to our nation of obesity and ill-health. Well done Tescos, SUGAR- is the new nicotine,a ticking time bomb, the root cause of our obesity epidemic. Thank you for reading my post. Please leave a post if you wish.
