Well that was a First for both Alan and I today. DNF Although - TopicsExpress

Well that was a First for both Alan and I today. DNF Although this doesnt sit well for either of us we know it was the Right Decision to make. Sadly the Taupo weather this year got the better of us. Due to the Rain and Bitterly cold temperatures paired with a really strong wind we made to call to pull the pin toward the end of Lap 3 at about 6:45am Sat morning. We made really good time on Lap one. Then Lap two really took its toll. We were drenched with driving rain and wind. To add to this the temp was freezing and when we rolled in around 11pm we were close to hypothermic. We couldnt feel our hands or feet and we were drenched and frozen to the core. This really took its toll on us into Lap 3 when the temp didnt improve and we just couldnt warm up although we had on every piece of dry clothing we had left. To give you an example Alan had on a thermal vest, 2x Winter thermotech jackets, a wind vest, winter gloves, thermal socks & booties, leg warmers and head gear!! And we were still struggling to get warm again and feel our feet :( We also both suffered with respiratory/breathing problems. Which got worse over the course of the Lap. It was painful and a real struggle to breathe and suck in enough oxygen. So we believe the right decision was made by us to stop before we really compromised our health any further. We are really disappointed. We know we were well prepared for this years Maxi event. But sadly the conditions werent in our favour!! Thanks to all of you for your good wishes and support over this years adventures. Its been hugely appreciated by us both. Weve had some amazing times this year, Grape Ride 1010km K4 - Coromandel Training Rides - Around Taupo and Our Ride to Coromandel Its been fantastic. Now its time for rest, recovery and having some fun rides over Summer :)
