Now That You are Married #7: Im writing to pass along lessons Ive learned to my son, Tyler and his new wife Emilie. I chose to post them each day so others could also learn from my mistakes and occasional successes. That said, heres #7: I have horrible allergies. Mowing the lawn is invitation to a day of absolute misery. I’m thankful we are finally able to afford someone to do our lawn, but for many years that luxury wasn’t in our budget. Cindy saw how much mowing the lawn made me sick. I would wear a mask and still get sick. So, she decided it was time for a change. Cindy asked for (demanded) to be the one who mowed the lawn. It bothered me. I always worried what other people would think if they drove by our house and saw my wife pushing a mower. Would they think I was lazy or a bad husband? Would they wonder about our marriage? There’s no shortage of people to tell you the “right way” to run your marriage. There’s a “right” division of household jobs. There’s a “right” amount of time to spend together. There’s a “right” way to act. Its right for the man to mow the lawn. Instead of obsessing with what will look “right” to others, focus on what works for you. Every marriage is unique. What’s right for your marriage will be entirely different than someone elses. I forgot to mention – Cindy also has horrible allergies. Every time she mowed the lawn, she struggled. But, she knew I had to speak multiple times every week. She chose to get sick, so that I wouldn’t. There’s a lot right with that kind of love!
