Now. The movie we all wanna know about. Im gonna automatically disclaimer and say that Aronofsky is one of my fave filmmakers, and that his views on religion as set forth in his amazingly-amazing The Fountain are just about in line with my own. (I would probably combust in the event of an Aronofsky collaboration involving Wong Kar Wai and Jane Campion on an adaptation of Amy Tans latest.....oh God I wish theyd do that! I digress.....sorry !) Another disclaimer with regard to religion: if you are uneducated around the history of major world religions and the histories of religious texts, and/or if your Torah education is limited to what your parents espoused or reenactments directed by your Sunday School teacher, then you need to obtain some education before youll be able to enjoy this film. Its very, very good. Somehow, Aronofsky and Ari Hadel (who wrestled their film from near sabotage by Paramount Pictures attempts to appease Christian Audiences......which makes no sense because its Torah, not Gospel...., but I digress) manage a series of political tightrope sprints that make American History X look like a cake walk. And though relevant argumentation and sometimes Apologists tack are central, the story stands alone just fine as a compelling drama. Aronofskys metaphors are (thankfully) more complex than those of his last film, Black Swan, though less so than in The Fountain. The performances are marvelous. Im thankful Aronofskys first choices for Noah (Christian Bale and Michael Fassbender) were booked because great as those two are, I really cant imagine anyone but Crowe on the role. I bought his gentleness and then his cruelty 100%. Noahs marriage was a thing of beauty thanks to a heart-stopping performance by Jennifer Connelly. The young performances were also admirable. Of all the good good very good things Noah has to say, my favorite is the argument that qualities identified as feminine (the key one of these being innocence) will be the qualities that save the world from destruction.
