In a bid to avoid the kind of violence that engulfed the country after the 2015 general elections, President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari are expected to sign a political accord ahead of the February 2015 general polls today. Jonathan who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Buhari, the presidential flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will meet in Abuja at an all political stakeholders national workshop on violence-free elections in 2015 to sign the undertaking. Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs Senator Ben Obi who gave the hint on the national workshop at a press conference said the event would be convened by the presidency at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers Abuja, at 9.00 am today. He said, “Finally, the workshop will seek to commit all Presidential Candidates and their respective political parties to a political accord that will be signed during the workshop on non–violence in the 2015 elections. “As a post-workshop follow-up, an All Political Stakeholders Committee on violence-free election constituted to observe and monitor compliance to the agreement that will be signed at the workshop”. Obi noted that national workshop which will be declared open by President Jonathan will be attended by all the presidential candidates in the 2015 general elections. He added that the workshop which is to be chaired by former Secretary- General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Dr. Kofi Annan is a follow-up of the All-political Parties and Stakeholders’ Summit in Abuja convened by the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) on June 12, 2014. According to the presidential aide, the 2014 summit “was due to palpable political tension in the country and the aftermath of several attacks carried out by insurgents in different parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory.” Linking the summit to the planned workshop, Obi said, “As we approach the February 2015 elections, it has become necessary to carry out an assessment of the areas that have remained a critical challenge in our polity and electoral process, and collectively seek solutions to them through political consensus. “One of those areas is electoral violence which is being escalated by political parties across the country.” He explained that he political class “should shoulder immense responsibility in guaranteeing an environment of peaceful and violence free elections through their acts, conducts, utterances and behavior.” Announcing the convening of the workshop, he said, “Consequently, the office of the National Security Adviser to the President and my office will be organizing an all Political Stakeholders National Workshop on violence free elections in 2015 on 14 February 2015 at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers Abuja, at 9.00 am prompt. “This workshop is a product of extensive and inclusive consultations between my Office and the ruling party on the one side; and all opposition parties who have collectively agreed on the need to come together to jaw–jaw and to agree on ways and means of collaborating with each other in the bid to ensure that the elections of 2015 are free and devoid of violence. “This workshop is designed as an interactive forum of all political parties and stakeholders participating in the 2015 elections to come together and commit to peaceful and violence-free elections in 2015. “The workshop will also emphasize the role of political parties and contesting candidates in creating the enabling environment for a peaceful election in 2015 through their conduct and behavior, and highlight the negative consequences of electoral violence our national security.” Stressing further on the need for such a workshop befor the 2015 polls, Obi said, “You all will agree with me that electoral violence has indeed impacted negatively and destructively whenever it occurred in our polity in any phase of the electoral cycle. “It had led to a wanton destruction of lives and property in the past, cast a dark cloud of uncertainty over our nation and threatened national security and our collective existence even in elections that were adjudged to have been efficiently and credibly conducted.” afikpochic.blogspot/2015/01/jonathan-buhari-sign-peace-pact-on-2015.html
