Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. Matthew 28:1-4 (NASB) As it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, a group of women who had prepared spices started on their journey to the tomb. These include Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. It appears that Mary Magdalene was the leader among these women as Peter was among the disciples. It seems she went on ahead of the women, arriving there before them. The stone was not rolled aside so that Jesus could get out, but so that others could get in and see that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead, just as He had promised. These were eyewitnesses who were to go and tell the others Jesus had risen from the dead. He arose on the day after Passover Sabbath. Matthew here fixes the time of Jesus’ resurrection as dawn began to break on the first day of the week. He rose the third day after His death. He was buried in the evening of the sixth day of the week and arose in the morning of the first day of the following week, so that he lay in the grave about thirty-six to thirty eight hours. He laid so long, to show that He was really and truly dead and no longer, that He might not see corruption. He laid long enough to answer the type of the prophet Jonas. Matthew 12:40: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” While accomplishing Hosea’s prediction. Hosea 6:2: “After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.”
