Now every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we [do it to receive a crown of eternal blessedness] that cannot wither. 1 Corinthians 9:25 This passage reminded me of an article that I read awhile back about Pistol Pete Maravich. Reading the passage above reminded me that the article talked about how as a result of many years of self-control and dedication, “Pistol” Pete Maravich got a scholarship to college. He became the all-time leading scorer in the history of college basketball, setting sixty records in the NCAA. He also became one of the greatest pro basketball players of all time, a five-time NBA all-star who was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. I remember his socks. Self-control won’t save any of us from sin; only Jesus can do that. It won’t get any of us to heaven; only Jesus can do that. But learning to be self-controlled can help us to resist temptation. It can help us to make right choices. We might even win a wreath however it can and will win for each of us a prize that will never fade away. SELAH!
