Mandarin Chinese lesson. !. #1 也是醉了 (yě shì zuì le) Meaning: To understand it literally, it says “one is drunk”, it is commonly used sarcastically, describing anything that makes you feel speechless (in a bad way) or annoyed. Some source translates it as “Are you kidding me?” not really accurate but a good try. Maybe try to understand it like “I might as well get drunk” when facing situations that I cannot change, but again it’s just to help you understand it, hardly equivalent. Example: I have my exams in two days but I still haven’t revised properly, then I can say “也是醉了(yě shì zuì le)” OR I saw an article about how severe air pollution in China has become, I can also say it. It truly is APPLICABLE TO ALMOST ANY CONTEXT in which you are facing something you feel annoyed about but apparently cannot change it. It is really full of humour, as ‘醉 (zuì)’ has always been used to describe the state of being drunk, it is used a lot in old poems to describe beauty or love such things that make you feel captivated, that is why it is so sarcastic, it resonates a little with British humour where the opposite is the said when describing something. Origin: It came from live commentary of a really popular game called DOTA (Defense of the Ancient), the commentators used the phrase to joke about their opponents. After the phrase went virus, there is a song called《我也是醉了》 if you wanna check it out, not exactly the best song, but really has some catch phrases (lol).
