Now if theres anything that annoys me the most when it comes to a Samoan taualuga is the following: 1. People screaming their heads off like animals (faaumu, choo hoo-ing, tuliisusu...whatever you wanna call it) during the taualuga - why? BECAUSE THEY OVERDO IT AND SOUND LIKE APES. 2. People all running up to the taupou/manaia and getting all up in their business-talk about tryna steal the spotlight 3. Every Tom, Dick and Harriet placing money on the taupou/manaia/matai...etc and all rushing in as if theyre about to murder the person dancing AND LASTLY 4. PEOPLE WHO LIE DOWN IN FRONT OF A TAUPOU/MANAIA..etc Talk about MAKAGA!!! Where and when did we start doing this? WHY do we do it? I remember back in College in Samoa, the teachers would literally yell at us if we attempted to even try it. Fellow Samoans, we have CLASS-our TAUALUGA, a beautiful cultural aspect seems so foreign now that sometimes I cringe at the sight of how ugly its become. People, have a listen to the audio clip in this video. Samoan Culture Specialist Mataafa Elia Autagavaia giving the low down on the siva a le taupou and aiuli for last years Aganuu ma Measina a Samoa Festival held in Apia. For our non-Samoan speakers, Mataafa basically explains that dance of the taupou and aiuli reflect the FEAGAIGA or Covenant between a brother and sister. There is TAPU (taboo) or sacredness in this covenant, therefore, a taupou must NEVER stand on her brothers back or vice versa. IF you agree with this video, please share with all our families and friends. Lets get it right SAMOANS! (Note: I mean no disrespect to any of the people in these videos)
