Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” – Exodus 19:5-6 (NIV) Many people think of the Laws of Moses as repressive commandments. But this passage in Exodus tells us that God has always wanted a people for himself. In a sense, any relationship needs rules. The progression of a dating relationship to a marriage is when both parties become convinced that they can give themselves to each other because their views of life are compatible. Jesus came to bring God’s view of life to us and then He sent the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts to love those views. When hearts become soft toward God, we desire to become His people, His treasured possession. How about you? Do you see the laws of God as repressive or lovely? This is an indication of the condition of our heart.
