Now normally its my daughter pointing out how much racism and bigotry still exist in this world. But for those of you who thinks that times are better than they were 50 years ago.... I wish you could be a fly on MY wall in My bakery just one day! Now, dont get me wrong because I have a lot of white customers, some have become really good friends of mine... But I have more whites than I care to mention that will smell my desserts outside on the street and nearly rip my doors off the hinges to get inside to see what has the outdoors smelling so sweet. Once inside, they go from case to case, talking amongst themselves about how delicious everything looks, how long its been since theyve had this or that and what they want to try first. Amongst asking questions about the different pastries and commenting on how cute the place is... they manage to squeeze in the question,How long have you all been here? And when I say, Ive been here 3 years, they suddenly realize its just too much to choose from or I think well just grab some dinner first or some other lame excuse to not support a black owned business. Yes, everything is wonderful when they think I am just the cook. It normally infuriates and frustrates me beyond belief but a moment ago I had a revelation after two seemingly nice older, white men did what I just described, then went as far as to ask me directly for clarification Oh, so you own the place? I just smiled and nodded my head because Id just clearly told them that... Instead of me cussing under my breath like usual as they made their quick exit, The Lord laid it on my heart to say... Lord, bless them, for they know not what they do! If thats the attitude my savior could take as he was being nailed to the cross, I can most certainly take that attitude over a measly slice of cake! But what I wont do is, sell myself short and belittle my accomplishments to make some bigot feel superior. Another black business woman down here suggested that we stop telling whites that we are the shop owners, Oh no, mam! Not ever will I deny who and what I am because it makes someone else uncomfortable!!! This is My business and I worked hard for what I got and truth be told, if they dont want to patronize My business because of the color of my skin, then I dont want their business anyway. Theres nothing a racist can do for me; including giving me their money! I dont want or need it ! One thing Ive always believed in besides My God and Myself is that all money aint good money!!!!!
