Now that I have internet again, heres an update: I learned a lot from Jim and Anita and really enjoyed my stay with them. Theyre very good people. Land down here is beautiful and there is lots of rich lake-bottom soil and Id prefer it to a city, but the very short growing season and up to year-round freezes would make life as a homesteader very difficult. Sure, I could build greenhouses but I want to live al fresco. My family didnt allow me in the home for Christmas and three-and-a-half years of studying in Europe have not done much to cultivate close friendships here (Mom and Dick did get me a great present, a power drill - but thats a thing and what a person needs on Christmas is family). Theres really nothing holding me from leaving Oregon. A person cant allow fear or the naysaying of others from pursuing their dreams. So Im setting off for The Deep South. There, conditions are far superior and land is actually much cheaper. Im setting my GPS Mississippi. Gas should cost less than six, seven hundred dollars. Dixie calls.
