Now that the Palestinians have lost in their outrageous bid to - TopicsExpress

Now that the Palestinians have lost in their outrageous bid to force a United Nations Security Council resolution on Israel, they are resorting to a number of desperate methods. Joining the International Criminal Court is one of such measures, but the most desperate of those efforts is one proposed by Turkey. Ever since Israel imposed an air, sea, and land blockade on Gaza to prevent Hamas terrorists from getting the means to harm Israeli civilians (a move Egypt too has followed), Turkey has been at the forefront of efforts to break the blockade. The crescendo of those efforts was the Mavi Marmara incident on 31st May, 2010. On that day, a group of 6 ships, led by the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara attempted to bypass the Israeli naval blockade and deliver aid to Gaza. Be careful -- aid in Middle Peace politics may range from giving food and medical materials to vulnerable civilians to donating rockets and Kalashnikov rifles to gullible militants. Israeli naval commandos promptly boarded the ship, where they were attacked by the occupants with knives and other sharps. During the struggle, the naval commandos killed nine of the occupants, eight of whom are Turkish nationals. Eventually, the attempt to bypass the Israeli blockade was not successful. The incident caused outrage in Turkey, and Turkey promptly expelled the Israeli ambassador. From that day, Israel and Turkey became sworn enemies. It is therefore not surprising that the Turks are leading efforts to, once again, attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade. This time, however, there will be a difference. Turkish activists want a future anti - blockade mission to be escorted by ships of the Turkish Navy. This, they believe, will protect them from Israeli naval commandos. I laugh. Israeli Air Force F-16 fighter jets pilots must be licking their lips in their sitting rooms. They will relish the opportunity of using Turkish naval vessels for target practice. The sharks of the Mediterranean Sea will even be happier, for there will be plenty flesh that day. Turkish president Recep Erdogan is smart though -- he will never approve of a mission that is bound to fail.
