Now that the days are longer and the temperatures are rising in Hwange National Park, the herds of elephants are enjoying cooling off in the water pans dotted around the park. The mud they spray on themselves not only cools them down but also helps to protect their skin from the elements. An elephant uses mud as a sunscreen, protecting its skin from ultraviolet light. Although tough, an elephants skin is very sensitive. Without regular mud baths to protect it from burning, insect bites, and moisture loss, an elephants skin suffers serious damage. After bathing, the elephant will usually use its trunk to blow dust onto its body and this dries into a protective crust.
