Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, I Timothy 4:1, 2 NKJV Deceiving spirits promoting doctrines of devils have only one purpose and that is to cause believers to depart from the faith. This seduction is what Paul expressed his misgivings about in 2 Corinthians 11:3: But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. The true Gospel of Jesus Christ is actually very simple, just like the gospel given to Adam and Eve. God simply told them they were not to eat of a certain tree lest they die. The only way they ended up doing exactly opposite of what God told them to do was through the seduction of the serpent. The key word here is seduction. Deceiving spirits are seducing spirits and their job within the devils kingdom is to get believers to doubt the integrity of Gods Word and start compromising what they know to be true. One of the most sure fired ways this happens is through introducing division into a body of believers which in turn yields itself to suspicion and all sorts of misunderstandings and accusations. The end goal of deceiving spirits is to divide and conquer. If they can divide the unity of the body they can conquer that part of the body and render it crippled. Whether an individual household or a church or huge ministry or denomination; if deceiving spirits can gain entrance they can within a short amount of time usually succeed in causing people to fight each other and constantly be suspicious of ulterior motives and over sensitivity to hearsay. The interesting thing about all this is that two people could read this blog and one would point fingers at someone and say I am talking about so and so while the other could point their finger at me and say I am writing about myself. To be honest, I am just trying to present what the Word of God says about a subject that far too many times is brushed under the carpet of ignorance or shoved in the closet of denial. Why do so many couples break up? Why are there so many broken families where there is little or no communication between siblings, parents or children? Why do so many churches end up spending all their time bickering about minuscule doctrinal issues with the end result being the splitting up of the church? Why is it nearly impossible for believers to remain friends for any length of time? The answer to all the questions is the same and it is deceiving spirits. Deceiving spirits work to disrupt and destroy relationships by inserting doubt, anger, suspicion, conflict or bitterness. If two people who rarely fight suddenly find themselves fighting all the time, it is clear that deceiving spirits are involved. If a church or other fellowship suddenly spends all of its time dealing with vicious internal attacks, it is a sure fired sign of deceiving spirits at work. Deceiving spirits make mountains out of molehills and turn minor disagreements into world wars. Deceiving spirits are the root cause of petty spats turning into knock down drag out battles where someone always gets hurt. Deceiving spirits set people against each other with the result being separation and ultimately rejection. We must be ever vigilant and aware of the presence of deceiving spirits. They were in the Garden of Eden seducing Eve and Adam. They were in the place where Jesus and his disciples had their last meal and convinced Judas is was alright to betray his Master. They were in the courtyard of the temple where they entered Peter who then flat out denied he even knew Jesus three different times. We cannot afford to let our guard down when deceiving spirits are actively at work in a situation. We must take decisive steps to spot them, isolate them, stop them and rebuke them in the name of Jesus Christ. If we dont, then they start twisting and turning things every which way but what is right. They turn lies into the truth and the truth into a lie. Once spotted and rebuked, deceiving spirits run for the hills. The only way they succeed is through the secrecy of their moves. Jesus dealt almost daily with the deceiving spirits housed within the Pharisees and other religious folk of His time. If we are indeed walking for and with God, we too will face an almost daily battle with these spirits. They are not to be feared for they are easily dispelled. But, they must be acknowledged when present and drastic steps taken to eliminate them or they will succeed in causing animosity, hurt feelings, despair and ultimately the belief that the lie is the truth.
