Num 33:1 These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 And Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of the LORD: and these are their journeys according to their goings out. 3 And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians. 4 For the Egyptians buried all their firstborn, which the LORD had smitten among them: upon their gods also the LORD executed judgments. 5 And the children of Israel removed from Rameses, and pitched in Succoth. K so this section is going to recap where the children of Israel have been during the exodus & it was commanded by YHVH to be written. So this part reminds us that it started the day after the 1st Passover of history & they were taken out of Egypt either during the reign of a pharaoh named Rameses (wikipedia said there were 11 of them, so probably the last according to this one theory i heard {if he had a short reign following someone who had a long one} because the plagues caused so much economic devastation someone said the dynasty ended) or the land of Goshen where they settled in Egypt was renamed after one of them. God used His mighty power to bring them out after the course of many plagues the last one killing the firstborn of every Egyptian. So we are reminded again that when our circumstances are overwhelming we should be relying on God to get us out of them. The line says also their gods were judged; so exactly what their gods were & how they were judged i am unsure; but the town was in a complete state of chaos because of the plagues, so their gods were shown to have no power to protect them from the real God in any case. It would be cool if there was some sort of actual fight between God & a false god & the false one got cut & that was why the river turned to blood lol. So the first place they pitched camp was Succoth = “booths” back in Ex 12:37 - Jacob also camped there back in Gen 33:17. Num 33:6 And they departed from Succoth, and pitched in Etham, which is in the edge of the wilderness. Then they went to Etham = “with them: their plowshare” back in Ex 13:20. Num 33:7 And they removed from Etham, and turned again unto Pihahiroth, which is before Baalzephon: and they pitched before Migdol. After that they went to Pi-hahiroth = “place where sedge grows” that was in front of Baal-zephon = “lord of the north” (this time it is a place named after a false god, not the false god himself) & they camped by Migdol = “tower” back in Ex 14:1-4. Num 33:8 And they departed from before Pihahiroth, and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in Marah. Then they passed through the Red Sea on dry ground (Ex 14:22) & after the Egyptian army followed them & drowned (Ex 14:26-28) they camped in Marah = “bitter” back in Ex 15:23 - they named it that because the water there was bitter. There God gave them a miracle by showing them a tree to put into the water to take the bitterness away & after that they got a classic line in Ex 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. Num 33:9 And they removed from Marah, and came unto Elim: and in Elim were twelve fountains of water, and threescore and ten palm trees; and they pitched there. Then they camped in Elim = “palms” back in Ex 15:27 that was probably named after the 70 palm trees in the vicinity. Num 33:10 And they removed from Elim, and encamped by the Red sea. 11 And they removed from the Red sea, and encamped in the wilderness of Sin. So this verse adds an extra campsite that we didnt see back in Ex 16:1 on the way to the wilderness of Sin = “thorn” or “clay”. So again we are getting the message that we have to read the whole bible to get all the information about any one topic therein as there is some information hidden about in places that you would not expect. This is where they first saw manna from heaven. All of this part of the recap only took about one month to happen so far. Num 33:12 And they took their journey out of the wilderness of Sin, and encamped in Dophkah. 13 And they departed from Dophkah, and encamped in Alush. 14 And they removed from Alush, and encamped at Rephidim, where was no water for the people to drink. So this part says that there were 2 previously unknown campsites one at Dophkah = “knocking” & another at Alush = “I will knead (bread)” before they arrived at Rephidim = “rests” or “stays” or “resting places” back in Ex 17:1 - so the point hits home twice in a row so far about how when the bible is telling a story there is no telling if all the pertinent information about it will be in the same section. So here at Rephidim was the time that God told Moses to smack the rock with his staff to get the water out. Also they had probably their first battle with Amalek there. Num 33:15 And they departed from Rephidim, and pitched in the wilderness of Sinai. So this part happened back in Ex 19:1-2 when they went to Sinai = “thorny”. They stayed here at least until the 1st month of the 2nd year (Num 9:1). Num 33:16 And they removed from the desert of Sinai, and pitched at Kibrothhattaavah. So after they got the 10 commandments & spent a stack of time getting many of the other laws of YHVH told to them & probably going through a bit of drama along the way they left & camped at a place they named Kibroth-hattaavah = “graves of lust” because of another drama they had where they had to bury a stack of people there after they lusted for meat & God gave them so many quails they had bird meat coming out of their ears. K so ima take a break here as this is a difficult section for me to keep my concentration as there is constant flipping of pages involved to see when what happened. So what did we learn so far in this bit? Perhaps that it is a good idea every so often to take stock of where you came from so as to see how far you have come along your journey of life, remembering the things we learned so as to not repeat our mistakes. Also if you are keeping records you can make any edits to the old record of stuff you forgot to add back then because your focus was on certain parts of the excitement. So yea we will continue this recap that i find to be actually kinda interesting because it has information that was previously concealed in it next time & until then let us pray that God reminds us of the lessons that we learned at the appropriate time before we need to apply them - Jn 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
