Num 34:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of Canaan; (this is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan with the coasts thereof: ) 3 Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward: 4 And your border shall turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass on to Zin: and the going forth thereof shall be from the south to Kadeshbarnea, and shall go on to Hazaraddar, and pass on to Azmon: 5 And the border shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea. 6 And as for the western border, ye shall even have the great sea for a border: this shall be your west border. 7 And this shall be your north border: from the great sea ye shall point out for you mount Hor: 8 From mount Hor ye shall point out your border unto the entrance of Hamath; and the goings forth of the border shall be to Zedad: 9 And the border shall go on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it shall be at Hazarenan: this shall be your north border. 10 And ye shall point out your east border from Hazarenan to Shepham: 11 And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward: 12 And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about. 13 And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe: 14 For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance: 15 The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising. So in this section YHVH tells Moses what the boundaries of the promised land are supposed to be - personally i can barely make heads or tails of it, but even so lets go over what it says. The south side will be along the wilderness of Zin = “flat” from the border of Edom with the salt or dead sea on the east side going past a place called the ascent of Akrabbim also known as the scorpion pass - so there was probably some scorpion infested mountains there next to a flat desert between the Salt Sea & the Mediterranean Sea & the pass that people used to get by the mountains was part of their southern border. Keep on going until you get to Kadesh-barnea = “holy” (probably the place they were when they sent in the spied 40 years ago) then past Hazar-addar = “enclosure of glory” & Azmon = “strong” then make a circular line to the river of Egypt (if this is a little river or if their boundary is supposed to go all the way to the Nile is unknown; but none of the mapmakers/ scolars think that God meant the Nile river here; but as far as i can tell perhaps the promised land is supposed to strech all the way to the Nile delta. The west side is the great or Mediterranean Sea & on the North side would go from the Mediterranean Sea to Mount Hor = mountain (the place where Aaron died) So the idea that the 40 years in the wilderness were spent going around the promised land looks to be accurate as they started on the south side & left Kadesh to go all the way around to their north border at Mount Hor without stepping foot inside & then they turned back south to enter in on the east side by Jericho. From mount Hor the border goes by the entrance of Hamath = “fortress” - that looks to be a city of Syria according to the bible dictionary & then on to Zedad = “mountain side” which according to the bible dictionary is a landmark & not a town. Then the boundary goes to Ziphron = “fragrance” & then on to Hazar-enan = “village of fountains” which would be a town on the north east corner. Then turn southwards to make your east border go past Shepham = “bald” (this looks to be a landmark) & Riblah = “fertility” this looks to be a town on the east side of Ain = “spring” which looks like another landmark. Then keep going south till you get to the sea of Chinnereth = “harps” which the bible dictionary says is the Sea of Galilee - then follow the Jordan south to the Salt sea & you have seen the whole thing. Moses then says to the children of Israel that this is the borders that are to be inherited & divided by lot among the 9 & a half tribes that have not been given anything yet as Gad, Reuben & half of Mannaseh have taken their land on the east side of the Jordan already. So according the the map i am showing you with todays study during the time of Joshua they did not take over all of their promised land at least on the north side & that is ok according to Ex 23:29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee. 30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. So what did we learn? Not much except maybe we found out why there are so many pictures of angels with harps; because Jesus hung out around the harp sea. Well next time we are going to check out the rest of the chapter that tells us who was going to be in charge of what tribe as they go in & until then let us pray that if God gives us a promise about something that He wants to give us let us have faith that He will do it even if we dont see it in our lifetime as 1 Jn 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
