O ALLAH! MY UMMAH, MY UMMAH!!! AND HE CRIED.... ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-’As relates that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) once recited the saying of Allah ‘azza wa jall regarding [the dua of] Ibrahim, “My Lord! They have misguided many of mankind. If anyone follows me, he is with me; but if anyone disobeys me, You are Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful,” as well as the saying of ‘Isa ‘alaihis salaam, “If You punish them, they are Your slaves. If you forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.” He then raised his hands and implored, “O Allah! My Ummah, my Ummah!” And he cried. Allah ‘azza wa jall then said, “O Jibreel, go to Muhammad – and your Lord is most knowledgeable [regarding all this] – and ask him, ‘What causes you to weep?‘” So Jibreel ‘alaihis salaam came to him and asked him. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) then informed him of what he had said – while he already was aware of that. Allah then said, “O Jibreel, go to Muhammad and tell him, ‘Indeed, We will please you regarding your Ummah, and We will not cause you to grieve.‘” [Sahih Muslim] Imam Muslim has recorded this hadith under the chapter heading, “The Dua of the Prophet for His Ummah, and His Crying out of Compassion and Pity for them.“ - Imam an-Nawawi, in his commentary of this hadith, states that this hadith clarifies the perfection and completion of the compassion of the Prophet for his Ummah, and his concern and worry for their wellbeing. It also elucidates the immensely high standing and rank which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has with Allah; and the greatness of His tenderness towards him. The wisdom in the sending of Jibreel to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is to display his nobility and high rank. - Furthermore, this hadith is a tremendous and sublime glad tiding for this Ummah, due to what Allah ta’ala has promised in His saying, “Indeed, We will please you regarding your Ummah, and We will not cause you to grieve.” For this reason, it is one of the most inspirational ahadith, if not the one most full of hope for this Ummah. - This hadith is in conformity with the saying of Allah ‘azza wa jall, “And soon will your Lord give you so that you shall be well pleased.” Think about this. On the day of Qiyamah, what is it that would please us? If we alone were to be saved from its unspeakable terror and be granted Jannah, that would be enough to make us ecstatic. We would not even think, let alone care for anything else. But Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)? Subhanallah! He was completely selfless, for his happiness and contentment lies not in him being granted safety, but rather in our salvation. His happiness is tied to ours. If we are saved from torment, that is what pleases him; and if we are punished, that is what grieves and saddens him. May we be sacrificed for him. O Allah! Grant us love for Your beloved.
