OBEDIENCE IN TRAGEDY Read Ezekiel 24:1 through 27:36 In AD 140, more than one thousand people were killed when the upper tier of the Circus Maximus in Rome collapsed. In 1863, more than two thousand worshipers died in a Chilean church fire. A coal-dust explosion in 1906 killed more than one thousand French villagers. A pesticide plant leak in India killed as many as two thousand people in 1984. Why does God allow senseless tragedy to occur? Ezekiel certainly could have questioned God when God suddenly took the prophet’s wife. “Son of man, with one blow I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes. Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears” (Ezekiel 24:16). Some tragedies are the direct result of human depravity, and others are the unfortunate outcome of living in a fallen world. God does not cause these tragedies even if He does not stop them. We are too finite to fathom God’s sovereignty. Knowing this, Ezekiel accepted God’s instructions: “The next morning, I did as I had been commanded” (Ezekiel 24:18). Thought for Today: We may question God’s plan, but we must obey even when we don’t understand. Quicklook: Ezekiel 24:15–24 Daily Prayer Emphasis Ministries to the Blind
