OBSTACLE OR REPROOF? In several sections of my book Rescue Me! There are references to the importance of hearing God directly. I say directly because some of us are satisfied to hear God through someone else. This article references my book, written not with this as a theme, but because it just happens to reinforce the importance of hearing clearly what God thinks about the various situations of our lives. Emma who is the main character of the book felt her mother’s refusal was an obstacle to her achieving her dream of having a university education so she decided to use every means possible to achieve her goal. She was successful in her goal. She gained entrance into the university and got her degree – a degree she did not use until decades later. Overcoming what she considered to be her main obstacle (her mother’s disapproval and lack of support) however led to her going to live overseas in her dream destination and being held captive in an abusive marriage for over twenty years. You see sometimes we can get what we want and think because we have succeeded that it is God’s will. Emma needed to learn a lesson that we all need to learn. She needed to learn that sometimes what looks like an obstacle might be God saying “no, not now, wait or I have something better for you.” God wants us to recognize that some obstacles are given by Him as reproofs. He designs these obstacles so that we will turn from our ways and follow His direction. Proverbs 1:23 says, “Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.” Proverbs 13:8 says, “The ransom of a mans life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.” King James Version This year let us be more patient and wait on God for the answer to life’s difficult questions. Both the small and large issues of life can best be handled by recognising and correctly responding to our Father’s loving reproof and waiting to hear what He has to say about the matter even if we don’t like His answer.
