The TV station Bill worked for turned the footage into a wonderful story. Secretariat was euthanized Oct. 4, 1989, due to complications from laminitis. Just a few days prior to his death, an employee of a Nashville television station traveled to Kentucky with his young children, and drove to Claiborne Farm in Paris with the hopes of seeing Big Red.
